Everyday communication and social etiquette

Making requests, emailing lecturers, and reading politeness cues.

Polite requests

Requests are often softened: "Could I possibly...", "Would you mind...". It is fine to ask people to repeat themselves or speak more slowly.

Emailing staff

Start with "Dear Dr Smith" or "Hi Sam" depending on how they sign their emails. Keep it short, say what you need, and include your student number.

Disagreeing

Seminars expect you to share opinions and challenge ideas respectfully. Phrases like "I see it slightly differently because..." work well.
