Accommodation and living arrangements

Halls, private renting, contracts, deposits and council tax.

Halls or private renting

University halls are a simple first step: bills are often included and you live alongside other students. Private housing gives more choice but needs more checks.

Before you sign

  • Read the whole contract and check its length.
  • In England, your deposit should be protected in a government-approved scheme.
  • Never pay money for a property you have not seen, in person or by a live video call with a verified agent.

Council tax

Households made up only of full-time students are usually exempt. Ask your university for a student status certificate and send it to your local council.
