Banking and money basics for your first months

Opening an account, budgeting for UK costs and avoiding common scams.

Opening an account

High-street banks may ask for your passport, proof of your UK address and a letter from your university. App-based banks are often quicker to open. Compare fees for international transfers.

Budgeting

Rent is usually your biggest cost. List fixed costs first (rent, phone, travel), then flexible ones (food, social life). Check your total against the money your visa application required you to show.

Avoid scams

Students are sometimes targeted by callers pretending to be the police, the Home Office or a bank. Official organisations will not ask you to transfer money urgently or pay in gift cards. If in doubt, hang up and call the organisation on its official number.
